Cabbage and sausage are some of the best combinations. I have cooked cabbage and sausage several times in the past. I wanted to try them in a slow cooker to see if it would also work. The verdict? It works! Slow-cooked cabbage and sausage are tender, delicious, and brothy.

What kind of sausage should I use?

This recipe calls for a smoked chorizo. I recommend using Kielbasa or Andouille. The smoky flavors and spices from the sausage will flavor the whole pot over the long, slow simmer. This makes it extra flavorful.

POTATO OPTIONS

You could use Yukon Gold or red potatoes chopped into 1- to 2-inch chunks. Russet potatoes are too fragile to use in this recipe.

How to Season Cabbage and Sausage

This recipe is meant to be as simple as possible. I added only a few teaspoons of Steak Seasoning, a mix of garlic, salt, and red pepper. You can also use Cajun seasoning or something as simple as salt, pepper, paprika, and caraway seeds.

How to Serve Cabbing and Sausage

You can use a slotted teaspoon to remove the broth if you wish. If you prefer, you can serve this with some butter and crusty bread on the side.

Ingredients

1.5 lb. Baby potatoes ($2.99)

One yellow onion is only $0.32

Half head of chopped cabbage (5-6 Cups) (1.14)

2 tsp Steak Seasoning ($0.20).

14 oz. smoked sausage ($2.79)

2 cups chicken broth ($0.26)

Parsley, chopped (optional garnish), 1 Tbsp ($0.10)

Instructions

Chop the onions into 1-inch pieces. Place the baby potato and onion in the bottom of a slow cooker that is 5 quarts or more prominent.

Chop the cabbage into 1-inch pieces. Add the steak seasoning and cabbage to the slow cooker.

Slice the sausages into rounds of 1/2 inch thickness. Add the chicken broth and link to the slow cooker. Stir gently to nestle the cabbage and sausage into each other. The broth doesn’t have to cover the entire dish.

Put the lid on your slow cooker. Cook on high for four hours or on low for eight hours.

Stir the ingredients together after 4 hours or 8 hours at low heat. Adjust the seasonings according to your taste. If desired, top with chopped parsley and serve immediately.
